"Get to Know" is a series on interesting and talented people we think you should get to know.

New Haven, CT’s The Tines have just released their latest single titled “Slow Wave” via Funnybone Records on June 28th, 2024.

The Tines are a quartet performing throughout the northeast. They have appeared at The Thing in Spring, New Haven Arts and Ideas, Limbsnapping, and more.

Produced at Sans Serif Recording in New Haven, “Slow Wave” is a departure for the band, featuring angular guitars, pushy vocals, and insistent drums played by the groups newest member, Chris Mala (Call It Arson, Heavy Breath, Tedo Stone).

Sans Serif Recording is a full service recording, mixing, and mastering studio where the band members work and play. We spoke with the studio and band leader Sam Carlson about their latest single, “Slow Wave,” the most interesting films he’s watched recently, and the importance of making bad art.

On making messy art

‘‘My advice for anyone who is interested in making art of any kind, is firstly to do it a lot and do it badly. … you have to make like, 100 bad versions of a thing to get one good one. And then also, I feel like it should be a process that is fun for you.’’ - Sam Carlson
